| comment caught me off guard. With a sideways glance he said, "Get real Makia". I do not know why but that hurt me a lot. You see, When I moved to Texas and Cedar Hill especially, I had to confront that attitude. I am Black, I am foreign Born (Cameroon-Africa) with an accent that many in the community found - well foreign. So who was I to come to this small conservative, "WHITE" community asking to be elected the first minority, ever? I got past that after talking one on one with many of the residents. A TV-channel 8 anchor asked how I did it. That answer was easy. I recalled Senator Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention. That night, I turned to my then wife and made a comment about Senator Obama's unifying tone and quality. During the conversation with my "political friend", I simply told him, "You may be surprised". Yes indeed, After IOWA, a lot of us are jumping for Joy. Finally, a candidate who promises like no other candidate before him, to run as a unity candidate for - ONE AMERICA! What is there that is not like about that? Some forget that Bush was able to win over some Democrats with his message of, "Compassionate Conservative". Yet, the Rush Linbaughers will crucify McCain for stretching his hand across the isle to work with members of other parties. My frustration was heightened when I listened to Black talk radio and heard Black people saying they would not vote for him because he is not, Black enough". For an individual who listened to my daughter who was born and raised in her earlier years in Cameroon tell me she was denied entry into a Black college club at the University of Texas, Arlington because, "she was not black enough", this statement brought back the bewilderment of my daughter's situation. When Texas became a player following Super Tuesdays failure to deliver a clear Winner for the Democratic Presidential field, I jumped at the opportunity to volunteer for the OBAMA camp. I have been a candidate for city, county and state wide Board elections. I thought it was a lot of work. Heck, this presidential thing, I do not know how the candidates do it. I volunteered to help with the rally and attended the almost mid night training at the Reunion Arena in Dallas and later became friends with the Camp. This led to our home being volunteered as the South Dallas County office for the campaign. The pictures in this page include events at the Reunion Arena, Training at Paul Queen College, The OBAMA office at our home, election Day in Texas March 4th and precinct caucus, Delegate meeting at our home March 27th, 2008. Send me your pictures and I will be glad to include them. |
